Be smart, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
