Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
