Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
