Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
