Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
