Be brilliant, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
