Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
