Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
