Be cunning, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the right way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
